The documentary hypothesis is a composite of four separate, complete, and coherent documents in the Torah. These four documents are the Yahwist, the Elohist, the Priestly, and the book of Deuteronomy. The documentary hypothesis was developed in the 18th and 19th century in hopes of being able to bring together some inconsistencies within biblical text. Each document deals with the same incidents and characters, but with different messages. The Yahwist source is said to be the oldest source out of the four. The date of its composition goes back to 950 BCE, which is shortly before the split of United Kingdom of Israel into Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. This specific source applies human characteristics, or personification, to Yahweh, the national god of the kingdom of Israel and Judah. The Yahwist source mainly recounts the history of religious theory. It begins with the story of Genesis, which explains the creation human beings and other living things. Along with the story of Genesis it explains the importance of human mortality, the need to work for a living, the existence of many languages, and man’s attempt to betray God’s limits. The main focus of the Yahwist source is the first time mankind came onto Earth and the connection he had with what Earth offered him.
